Kyanite gets its name from the Greek term kynos (dark blue).
In Germany, the stone is also known as disthene (two hardnesses).

History
The name Kyanite was first mentioned in 1789 in the records of the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 to 1817). In 1801, his French colleague René-Just Haüy (1743 to 1822) mentioned the same mineral under the name Disthene.
