Rhodolite
Radiant crimson
Rhodolite is a particularly exquisite variety of the garnet group, distinguished by its subtly shimmering hues that range from delicate rose to deep purplish-red. Its name is derived from Greek and literally means "rose stone," which refers to its characteristic color effect. Due to its high brilliance and excellent light refraction, rhodolite is frequently faceted, which allows it to display a vivid, sparkling play of color.
Effect
In traditional gemstone lore, various symbolic properties are attributed to the rhodolite. It is considered a stone said to promote zest for life and emotional balance. Furthermore, it is believed to strengthen the heart and support the development of inner harmony and self-confidence. In addition, it is often associated with inspiration and creative energy. Its warm, reddish-pink radiance is described as being supportive of optimism and warmth of heart.
History
Although garnets have been prized as gemstones since antiquity, rhodolite was only recognized as a distinct variety towards the end of the 19th century. The first significant finds came from the Cowee Valley in the U.S. state of North Carolina, where gemologists first documented its special properties. Due to its high transparency and brilliance, rhodolite quickly developed into a popular gemstone variety within the garnet group.
