History
The mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749 to 1817) drew from Greek vocabulary when naming it: apatite translates to 'deceptive stone,' as it was often confused with other minerals. Today, the gemstone is also used in medicine: hydroxyapatite is suitable as a bone substitute, as human bone itself consists largely of this mineral.
